Mercury Marine’s Mind-Blowing Concept
At the Miami International Boat Show 2026 this past February, I attended a press event that covered all the new and innovative products Brunswick was launching. One of the most interesting items I thought they were going to show off was the outboard below.

I was surprised when it was glossed over, mentioned briefly as a concept, and then they moved on. Wait, what? I wanted to know more.
I was later told by a Mercury representative that it is just a concept that they wanted to put out there to see what their consumers thought of it. I’m guessing to gauge interest in it and get feedback. But it was odd that there was absolutely no information to accompany the display.
Even though it wasn’t a prominent display, it drew a lot of interest and confusion from people walking past it who realized it wasn’t a 600hp model.
With the Mercury 600 and the new 500R Mercury racing outboards being so successful, this could be Mercury's next large outboard production in an upcoming announcement later this year.
With the increasing popularity of ever larger outboard yachts and the move of many boaters from inboard craft to outboards, these monsters actually make sense… in an alternate and very different world from the one I live in.
Although there was no signage, it was definitely a mock-up. Taking a close look, it appeared to have the same lower end and a similar midsection and cowling to the current 600HP.
The horsepower marking on it said 808 — definitely a significant increase over the current 600HP. Identifying it with 808 decals and a Chrome 808 emblem at the top of the cowling means, in my opinion, it's further along than just a concept.
Mercury Marine and Brunswick have not grown the way they have by backing and funding projects that weren’t destined for success.
As larger and larger outboard power boats are being produced, so is the need for monster outboards to propel them. It makes sense that as they grow in size, so too should the outboards that power them.
Knowing Mercury as an innovator that's pushing hard to gain more and more market share, I’m sure there will be an announcement of a new super-horsepower engine at some point in the not-too-distant future.
